Essential Advisory Services

Matthew B. Schechner

President & Financial Planner

About Me

Matthew Schechner, President of Essential Advisory Services, created this firm with one focus in mind: To present goal-focused financial planning that made sense in his clients’ lives rather than follow the traditional script of financial planning.

Most advisors manage portfolios based on benchmarks and product solutions. Instead of following the usual business of financial planning, Matthew chose to focus on building a collaborative and empowering environment where he and his clients work together. This goal-focused approach builds a financial outlook designed to meet goals for the client’s life, family, and future. Every member of Matthew’s team has a different focus, with the priority that a full picture of a client’s financial health is seen at all times.

Capitalizing on his strengths in communication and understanding behavior, Matthew focuses on truth and transparency with his clients. Matthew is constantly planning, adjusting, and communicating with clients to help them remain on track to meet their life goals.

Matthew began his career as a financial planner in New York City with Gruntal & Co. He then spent several years at Oppenheimer & Co. as a Senior Vice President. For 10 years, Matthew had been a financial planner with National Holdings. In 2019 Matthew launched Essential Advisory Services.

In 2019, Matthew was honored by Envestnet as Essential Advisor of the Year, selected from a pool of over 90,000 advisors. This award recognizes organizations and individuals who embody the core values of being an essential advisor. He also received the First-Class Service Award from National Holdings in 2019. Also, for his work after Hurricane Sandy, Matthew was awarded the BNI Humanitarian Award in 2013. Finally, through his continuous involvement, dedication, and leadership with the Merrick Jewish Centre, Matthew was selected as the 2012 Annual Gala honoree for Leadership. Matthew works hard at giving back to both his clients and his community through active involvement. He was the youngest member on the Board of Directors for Gilda’s Club, an organization dedicated to those living with cancer. He was an executive board member of Merrick Jewish Centre, and he has also coached basketball and baseball for his son and daughter. Currently, Matthew resides in Bellmore, NY with Carolyn, his wife of 25 years, and their two children, Ryan, 21, and Layla, 18.
